Italian Espresso Machines Reviewed
Do you want to buy your own espresso machine but not sure how to choose from the many espresso machines found in the stores? The first thing one needs to do is gain an understanding of how these espresso makers work so that one can ask the right questions.
Hot water – around 90 degrees centigrade, is forced under pressure through coffee grounds. The pressures can be quite high – in some cases as much as 9 bars. The finely ground coffee has oils that when extracted make a rich, flavorful, strong cup of espresso.
If the machine is already prepped – water heated and pump primed – it should be able to produce a shot within a few seconds. The grinding of the coffee in the first instance makes a difference to how long this takes. Fine grinds tend to allow the water to flow faster, although how tightly packed they are has a bearing also. See this article for more details: Espresso coffee resource.
Making milk based drinks also requires a machine that has a steam wand to froth the milk and many of the best machines will do this without a problem. The wand forces steam into a container of milk to make the milk hot and frothy. How much froth vs milk is required will depend on your personal preferences. The choice of espresso makers can be overwhelming. The type of machine you choose will partly be dependent on budget,. but there are big differences between an automatic maker and a simple pump driven one.
One of the tricks to making good espresso is choice of coffee. and picking the right blend for you is crucial. The coffee you choose will need to be picked especially for your tastes and the type of machine you buy if you are going to get that perfect shot.
Another quality that a good cup of espresso must have is that it should be lightly roasted so its sugars and aroma is not lost in the brewing process.
Often a darker roasted bean will end of tasting burnt or of charcoal in the final shot. You may have to use bottled or spring water depending on the water quality in your area and if a bad taste filters through to the shot. The espresso machine you pick must also be able to consistently heat the water to the same temperature every time and this needs to be around 95 degrees c.
